I get hundreds of questions from people about their particular eye situation. When the answer would also help others, I address the topic in this column. Other questions require personalized advice. Email me with your question and I'll either answer it in a future column or tell you how to get the personal advice you need.
THIS MONTH'S QUESTION:
Q. My son won't put down his video games! Aren't they bad for his eyes?
A. Staring at a screen for hours on end would certainly seem to be stressful on the eyes.
Yet, according to a recent study (click here to read it), it turns out that playing some video games can actually help to improve certain critical aspects of eyesight. However, not all video games are created equal, in terms of their effect on the eyes.
How can this be?
I've always said that it is not WHAT you do with your eyes that leads to visual stress, it's HOW you use your eyes that really matters. Change how you use your eyes - deliberately or not - and your vision improves.
Any activity that encourages correct eye habits - even if you do it unconsciously - is good for the eyes. On the other hand, activities that silently encourage negative eye habits can lead to decreased vision and eye strain, particularly when done repeatedly over time.
Tracking a moving object, easily shifting your focus from one point to the next, and concentrating with alertness are three of the eye habits that these video games encourage.
Over the years, I've determined that there are actually 10 habits that promote better vision. If you have the Program for Better Vision book, you know what they are.
But if you haven't read the book yet, I'll send you an hour-long Audio CD recording, the 10 Keys to Better Vision, for free. On the CD I tell you in detail what the 10 habits are and show you how you can make them second nature in your day to day life.

As an added bonus, I also dispel the 5 most common misconceptions people have about improving vision.
If you aren't already aware of this valuable information, I urge you to listen today. I think your eyes will be glad that you did!
